Automotive

By the mid 1990’s it became obvious that the Automotive industry was undergoing a rapid and comprehensive revolution, caused principally by the introduction of electronic monitoring and controls systems. The introduction of Digital navigation systems presented many usability & ergonomic problems from their low awkward position in the Radio box area of the central dash board, to the types of controls and reach distance . Studio McKimm having worked extensively for the mobile telecoms industry was able to apply it skills in this sector. Along with my long term work colleague Guido Astorri we set up  DHS Ltd, Design Hosting Software in 2001 to focus exclusively on the challenges of Small Screen Interactive design for the Automotive Sector. In 2016 the company was incorporated into HDS Italia Srl. Over the last 16 years we have work for leading Automotive OEM’s and their suppliers, principally in the csector.

Medical

Another sector where usability & digital technology has a mission critical aspect is the Medical & Health Care one.  This ranges from hand held & wearable medical devices to digital interactive aids. We have placed a special focus on using interactive digital technology to enable independent living for the elderly & people suffering a wide range of disabilities.  One area where we have worked in since 2004 is in the dialysis sector, from both the medical practitioners and patients perspective. In 2013 we set up HD Solutions Ltd specifically to develop an in-clinic training & home management system to enable people to migrate their dialysis treatment from the Clinic to the comfort and convenience of their own homes.  At present only a small fraction of patients dialysis in their homes, the reasons are principally related to insecurity and lack effective training. It is here we aim to use digital tools to over come these barriers.
